The current issue of SFis reports on Dede Wilsey’s plans for the de Young Museum’s costume collection.

She would like it to rival the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

“When we do a costume show, I want it to be the best of what it represents,” she says.

The new museum now has 3,000 square feet devoted to costume and textiles — much more space than it previously had.

“We just never had the space to devote to fashion before.”

Even though she is going to be very busy over the next few years raising tons of cash for a Mission Bay hospital, she will also work on supporting the de Young’s costume department.

“I want San Francisco to be known for top-notch medical care, museums and fashion, and I will out all my energy toward that goal.”
