The Examiner’s regular “Lives of Style” feature introduced readers to Denise Hale this week. Her life has been far too complicated for me to summarise here, so just go read the article for yourself.
Perhaps the more exciting news about Mrs. Hale, however, is to be found in the current gay paper — The Bay Area Reporter. Roberto Friedman reports that she will be judging a fashion competition at The Castro in July, along with Santino Rice and Jeffrey Sebelia. This should be a lot of fun:
“In-pressario Marc Huestis will present this summer’s sizzling Fabulous Fashion in Film Festival (running July 27-August 3), a whole week devoted to haute couture on-screen, both large and small.
So, fashionistas unite! On Friday, July 27, the opening-night gala Bad Boys of Runway features Project Runway faves: Season 2′s flamboyant finalist Santino Rice (“An -dre, I told you we were getting the surf-n-turf special at the Red Lahb-ster!”) appearing live with Season 3′s tatted winner Jeffrey Sebelia, yum. Together, they will dish the dirt on who’s in and what’s what, and who’s doing whom, on the hugely popular series; share their philosophy of Fashion; and update us on their latest work.
Afterwards they’ll switch seats and judge the fierce Project Fabulous Fashion competition, alongside SF’s grande dame Denise Hale (the former Mrs. Vincente Minnelli, and yes, Liza‘s stepmom!) Winner receives $500 courtesy of CastroBear Presents. The loser gets a one-way ticket to the Red Lobster. Hey, at least there’s a salad bar!”

At the gala opening of the Asian Art Museum’s Phantoms of Asia exhibit, chairs Komal Shah and Eliza Cash welcomed museum board members, major donors, civic, corporate and social leaders, artists featured in the exhibition, and art enthusiasts from around the world to one of the season’s most important events.

For its 35th anniversary the San Francisco Decorator Showcase returned to the Classic Revival mansion on 2020 Jackson Street, which had also been the home of the 1991 showcase. The honey-colored brick structure, designed in 1902 by German-born architect Julius E. Krafft, is being offered for $17.5 million (as of June 2012.) Adeeni Design Group’s Claudia Juestel gives us a tour.
