‘WORLD VIEW ON DESIGN’:
In association with SFDC Winter Market:
NEWEST TRENDS, IDEAS, INSPIRATIONS FROM SOME OF THE WORLD’S TOP ARCHITECTS, DESIGNERS, LANDSCAPE DESIGNERS, FURNITURE DESIGNERS, VISIONARIES.
WE WILL ALSO BE PRESENTING AN EXCLUSIVE SHOWING OF CHRISTOPHER FLACH’S NEW FILM –‘MADELEINE CASTAING’, A DOCUMENTARY ON THE LEGENDARY PARIS DESIGNER.
Today, design study and travel to study/view/understand the scope of design is essential for designers–to broaden their style horizons, to widen their client-base, to find new sources and resources.
Although the Internet brings the world of furniture, décor, and the decorative arts as close as the click of a mouse, designers need to experience firsthand the cultures from which design ideas and philosophies originate, so they can understand the directions in world design, from comprehending its history to predicting its future trends.
Our speakers are seasoned designers and architects—and savvy travelers who scour the cities of Paris, London, and Rome for inspiration, to study new directions in art, to attend antiques fairs and art exhibits, and to immerse themselves in other cultures.
Presented by Diane Dorrans Saeks, this eclectic mix of leading architects and designers will discuss a range of design philosophies and approaches, focusing on the influence and scope of international design. They will present their newest work, including residences and houses in San Francisco.
Diane Dorrans Saeks is a noted editor, lecturer, and the author of 19 books, including Palm Springs Living (Rizzoli, 2007), California Country Style (Chronicle Books, 2006) and Michael S. Smith: Elements of Style (Rizzoli, 2006). Ms Saeks has also written extensively for the New York Times, Departures, Garden Design, and many other publications around the world. She is the editor at large for C magazine, the interior design editor for SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE, and the California editor at Metropolitan Home. Ms. Saeks developed the Interior Designers Forum for CCA eleven years ago.

BASSAM FELLOWS:
The notable design/architecture partnership of Craig Bassam and Scott Fellows has been admired in Europe, Australia, and the United States for its refined design, focus on craftsmanship, and a special understanding of modern interiors and contemporary style. The designers, based on the East Coast, recently introduced a superb collection of furniture for venerable McGuire Furniture Company, based in San Francisco. The duo founded their own company in 2003—and focus on exceptional quality, craftsmanship, traditional methods, and a sense of rigorous design for today. Their designs—crafted by leading European artisans—are certain to become future heirlooms and essential collections. We are honored that they will be presenting their newest work.
Special Feature
Premier of “MADELEINE CASTAING,’ a new documentary film by San Francisco film-maker and award-winning photographer, CHRISTOPHER FLACH
Christopher Flach was first introduced to the design great Madeleine Castaing (1894-1992) when he visited her Paris antique shop with his wife, top designer Martha Angus. He struck up a friendship with this very ‘insider’ designer and antiquaire and was given permission to film her shop and apartment.
This elegant and insightful film explores her work, her personality, and her international influence. The chic film offers a very special insight into this great designer—whose work is copied, admired and revived by chic young Domino readers and top designers. The mix of Russian, Biedermeier, Napoleon III, and English regency furniture, on ocelot patterned carpets in rooms always populated by books effortlessly came together on the rue Jacob–and was rarely if ever successfully imitated by others.
Jacques Grange once worked as her assistant and her influence is evident of this unique master of imaginary time and space. Her wallpapers and textiles are still available—and highly desirable.
Chris studied photography with Angel Adams and Mary Ellen Mark. This is his first documentary film.
