McFarlane Still Hopeful for Spawn Sequel

It’s been over ten years since Todd McFarlane’s Spawn was adapted to the big screen and while there doesn’t seem to be anyone clamoring for a follow up, the comic writer says plans for a sequel aren’t dead.

In a recent interview with Game Pro, McFarlane says with the recent success of Iron Man and The Dark Knight there’s been renewed interest in another Spawn flick. The only reason a deal hasn’t been reached yet is because McFarlane is insistent on directing the film.

“They’d have to get a young, inexperienced director anyway. My answer is, why not me? If you’re going to go get a schmuck, let me be your schmuck. And oh by the way, I’ve been living with this movie in my head for a long time. I don’t feel like trying to convey what’s in my brain to somebody else…it would take too long. I can just do it myself. And people aren’t adverse to it. You know, Frank Miller is directing his stuff now.”

“In the movie idea I have for Spawn, there is no super villain. It’s a completely real drama that happens to have a spook in it. And it doesn’t mean that the spook has an arch-enemy or a nemesis, or any of that. It just means that there’s a sentinel stuck in the middle of The Godfather”.

For those who don’t know, Spawn centers around Al Simmons, a government agent who is killed and sent to hell. To see his wife one more time, he makes a deal with the devil to become an undead “hellspawn”. Spawn tries to retain his own humanity while finding a way out of the devil’s control and battling a variety of enemies, both supernatural and criminal.

The first flick grossed $54 million domestically on a budget of $40 million. It starred Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo, Theresa Randle, Nicol Williamson, D.B. Sweeney and Martin Sheen.
