US country singer Mindy McCready is being treated in hospital after she apparently tried to take her own life, Nashville police have said.

Her brother said he found her at home with cut wrists after she had taken several pills, a police report said.

She had been “very intoxicated” after a night out, he told police.

A hospital spokeswoman said the troubled singer, 33, who is best known in the US for her hit Guys Do It All The Time, was in a stable condition.

In October, McCready was released from jail after serving about 30 days for breaking probation for a 2004 drug charge.

That charge, for fraudulently obtaining prescription painkillers, was the first of a series of run-ins with the law for the singer.

She was found guilty of driving on a suspended licence after an incident in May 2005.

That was one of a pair of violations of parole that led to a warrant for her arrest being issued in August 2005.

She was subsequently arrested and held for 10 days before being released on bail.

At a court appearance a month later, she revealed she had attempted suicide after finding out she was pregnant.

The star, who has not released an album since 2002′s Mindy McCready, has been working on a comeback.

Earlier this year, she released a new song, I’m Still Here, on her website and last month she performed at a Nashville Broncs basketball game.<p
