McG to Direct New 20,000 Leagues Flick
For San Francisco film lovers, we are pleased to present this story from “The Moving Picture.”
Disney has signed McG (Charlie’s Angels) to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo, a reimagining of the classic Jules Verne story that is being fast tracked by the studio, report the trades.
Written by Bill Marsilli, the film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus. Marsilli previously wrote the Tony Scott action movie Déjà vu, which starred Denzel Washington.
The 1954 original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the first live-action film made by Walt Disney, who famously bet his studio on a movie best remembered for the giant squid scene. It became the second-highest grossing film that year and won three Oscars. The film has also been the basis for various rides at the Disney theme park over the years.
McG’s next film is Terminator Salvation, the fourth installment in the successful sci-fi franchise. It stars Christian Bale and Sam Worrington and opens in May.
Disney is hoping to start production on 20,000 Leagues this year.
