Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionaire

It’s the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night and the signs are looking good for British film Slumdog Millionaire.

It won five trophies at the Critics’ Choice Awards in Hollywood on Thursday night, which included best film and best director for Danny Boyle.

Skins star Dev Patel, who stars in the film, won best young actor but wasn’t there to collect his award.

He’s heading to LA for the Golden Globes on Sunday though, where the film’s up for four gongs.

"We don’t know how it’s going to go. I guess, like everyone, we are hoping for the best. Let’s see"

Dev PatelHe says he’s excited but nervous about going to the ceremony: “I was out in India on a bit of a holiday.

“I was in Gujarat, which is a really villagey area, and I was getting phone calls asking me what I should wear to the Golden Globes and if I want Calvin Klein and I was like, ‘I don’t know. I haven’t a clue’. But it’s really great.”

Dev Patel, sex-obsessed Anwar in the first two series of E4’s Skins, plays Jamal Malik in Slumdog Millionaire, a former street child from Mumbai in India.

He wins big on a television quiz show but raises the suspicions of police and the show’s host.

Dev Patel says he’s keeping his fingers crossed that the film will win one of the awards it’s up for.

“It’s such a nice feeling to be part of the Golden Globes and just to be nominated. I think that’s an achievement in itself,” he said.

“We don’t know how it’s going to go. There are some great actors, some great films, some wicked directors.

“I guess, like everyone, we are hoping for the best. Let’s see.”

Freebies

The Golden Globes are often seen as a good indicator of Oscar success in February.

Dev says he’s hoping the film is nominated for an Oscar but is just happy to be involved in the process.

He said: “It would be so exciting. Just to be part of the buzz is so cool, it’s such a nice feeling to be part of the buzz. We don’t know what’s happening next.

The 18-year-old actor is relatively new to the glitzy world of Hollywood and says one of the things that has surprised him so far are the freebies given out to the stars.

He said: “I was out in the Toronto Film Festival and the goody bags they gave were just ridiculous.

“And I was so pleased to get them and I kept on thanking the people that were dishing them out and they were like, ‘Dude, dude, dude. You don’t need to thank us. It’s just a goody bag’. I was like, ‘Sorry’.
