McG vs. Bay

For San Francisco film lovers, we are pleased to present this story from “The Moving Picture.”

It’s the battle of the blockbusters. Last week when the first teaser poster for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hit Michael Bay commented on his official site about promotional material for other upcoming summer fare.

While he didn’t name names, it isn’t hard to figure out he was talking about the Terminator Salvation trailer when he said this: “We’ve seen certain movies coming out even try to duplicate Transformer size robots in their ads. Please, come on.” Obliviously referring to the giant-sized Terminator, known as a Harvester, seen towards the end of the trailer.

We didn’t post the quote last week, mainly because it seemed like an off the cuff remark, but now Salvation director, McG, has responded to the comment. The filmmaker was recently screening some footage from his highly anticipated flick and had this to say:

“It bothers me to tell you the truth. Ultimately, our large robots have nothing to do with the “Transformers” robots,” McG replied. “I say with respect, giant robots have been the theme of film for a real long time. So we want to do everything we can to create separation,” he continued. “Our film’s about T-800s and the Marcus character and the Connor character, and this, that, and the other. So, to have people have a problem with that wouldn’t be working for us so we want to make sure there’s separation.”

I love the “my blockbuster is different than your blockbuster” argument, but really, I don’t think either McG or Bay have anything to worry about. I’m sure both flicks will bring in the cash when they open later this year. Fans are eagerly awaiting both.

Terminator Salvation hits screens in May and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen opens in June.
