DESIGN ABOVE ALL at One Rincon Hill

As downtown living has become more and more fashionable in cities across the country luxury high-rise apartment buildings have sprouted up all over the SoMa district, the City’s fastest growing micro-neighborhood. One Rincon Hill is one of San Francisco’s newest, and by sheer height, most recognizable landmarks.
This soaring residential tower is among the tallest buildings on San Francisco’s skyline, which is in part due to its location atop Rincon Hill, the last buildable hill in the city and the most immediate structure visitors see as they cross the Bay Bridge into the City.

The first of its kind in San Francisco, “Design Above All” is a unique designer showcase featuring condominiums in place of a stately mansion. This collaboration between Urban West Associates, the developers of One Rincon Hill, and the San Francisco Design Center allows visitors to experience luxury high-rise living seen through the eyes of four Northern California design firms, which were selected by jury to create designs for four different life styles, that of a young millionaire, a single corporate executive, a pair of empty nesters, and a down-sizing couple.
The four penthouses on the 53rd floor of the 64-story One Rincon Hill have of course absolutely breathtaking views of the City and the Bay. As I found they are stunning both during the day and by night, and seeing helicopters flying by at eye level was certainly an unfamiliar experience for me. But it is the interiors of these condominiums, as you see here, that command our attention. Each unit is available for sale and turn-key-ready with every piece of furniture and art included.
EXUBERANCE AT PLAY

Leslie Bamburg, founder of LABEXPERIMENT, was intrigued by the prospect of designing for an accomplished younger client, a single thirty-something Google executive, who has gotten accustomed to the finer things in life, but also still enjoys the playful indulgencies of his childhood.
Bamburg did not alter the layout of the two-bedroom condo, but added humor, splashes of color and boyish charm to a space she designed for someone who believes that graffiti art and modernist furniture are not mutually exclusive, nor are Chuck Taylors or haberdashery. She lined the narrow entry hall with large paintings on one side and a collection of vintage skateboard tops by Ryan Francis on the other.
Throughout Bamburg struck a playful balance between high-end contemporary furnishings and art set against humble found objects, in the end creating a sense of modern nostalgia. For more details please visit the Design Above All gallery of LABEXPERIMENT.

CONTINENTAL INFLUENCE

Eugene Anthony, founder and principal of Eugene Anthony and Associates, and his associate Laura Galia designed the three-bedroom apartment, the largest of the four, for 50-something empty nesters seeking the conveniences of luxury high-rise living.
Anthony eliminated the third bedroom and turned it into a family room, providing additional space for entertaining, more suitable for the couple’s life style. He also created a library from the large hall closet, added moldings, atypical for most modern high-rise apartment buildings, an electric fireplace in the living room, and a variety of wall coverings throughout, to complete the initially bare spaces.
To suit the well-traveled couple’s more classical tastes Anthony opted for a mix of modern and traditional designs, which he described as “Paris-meets-Manhattan”. Contemporary art and figurative bronzes are highlighted by a soft cream, silver and gold palette. Furnishings range from old-fashioned, over transitional, to decidedly modern.
For example, in the dining area, instead of an old world Parisian chandelier a distinctively modern Italian crystal chandelier from Policelli Lighting completes the setting of a classical table and chairs. The overall result seems to reflect the designer aspiration of mixing some of the owner’s cherished treasures from their old home with modern pieces for an updated, more urban look.

Mary Ann Schicketanz, assisted by Carissa Duncan, both of Carver + Schicketanz chose the north west three-bedroom unit to create a chic domicile for a cosmopolitan couple who downsized from a large suburban home.
Schicketanz’ European sensibility shines through in her confident and practical approach to the small and at time awkward rooms. She removed a number of walls to open up the foyer and to enlarge the narrow halls. A subtle color scheme of grays and creams and sophisticated, understated, and perfectly scaled furnishings are alluringly contrasted by the boldness of the art, all black and white museum-quality photography, expertly curated by Holly Baxter and Jana Cook Blankenship of Baxter & Cook Art Advisors.
Schicketanz collaborated with Baxter & Cook Art Advisors from the very beginning, as the clients’ art collection provided the inspiration for the overall design. The art was no after thought here, and this flawless composition culminates in a cosmopolitan environment exuding soothing comfort in a fast-paced center of urban life.

NATURE HIGH IN THE SKY

Donald Fugina and Karen Calija with Donald Joseph Inc. took a natural approach to the design the three-bedroom North-East-facing apartment composed for a single male corporate executive.
Fugina and Calija incorporated sensory elements such as a hanging succulent garden in the entry, a tranquil fountain and an aquarium filled with all white fish, white coral and clear rock crystals in the mirrored gallery. They added more organic elements in their choice of furnishings, such as cork fabric on the sofa and tables, a console and a desk made from petrified wood.
The designers aimed to create a place of respite, relaxation and rejuvenation for this busy executive. But this home is not all about calm. In contrast they turned one of the bedrooms into a creative room with an emphasis on music, complete with a desk area by the window, a dry bar, a media wall and the owner’s guitar collection taking over the walk-in closet. The result could be described as Nature meets Rock n’ Roll.

Deepa Pakianathan and Phil Pemberton recently hosted a reception for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in anticipation of its upcoming Gala on April 20, 2013, which pays tribute to legendary opera baritone and Conservatory Advisory Board member Thomas Hampson.
Conservatory mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook directs and stars in a program featuring special performances by Hampson with Conservatory students, faculty and guest artists. UCSF Partners in Care recently held its 2013 kick-off membership event at Reed & Greenough. Membership co-Chairs Schuyler Hudak and Libby Leffler hosted the launch party and kicked off the well-attended evening with brief remarks, followed by UCSF Partners in Care President Katie Budge, who spoke about the services that the auxiliary organization provides to the hospital.
UCSF Partners in Care works with UCSF hospital staff to fund programs that provide comfort and well-being to patients and their families while visiting the UCSF medical center.

Renowned European designer Ms. Madeline Pauw recently made an appearance at a delightful luncheon at Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco, where her Spring 2013 collection was presented.
The Pauw collection is designed by Madeleine Pauw, daughter of the original founders. Pauw is known for its luxurious fabrics and soft touches of femininity while integrating just a splash of masculine undertones, but always keeping the fit and style in mind for the female physique. The company has been in business for over 50 years, and originally was created in the Netherlands where it currently has 29 stores.

The International Museum of Women (IMOW) hosted its annual Celebrating Change Benefit on March 6th, 2013, and the associated Vanguard Group hosted its Art Live Lounge benefit.
This year’s benefit featured IMOW’s second annual Innovator Award for Women in Technology, presented to Padmasree Warrior, Chief Technology and Strategy Officer of Cisco Systems.
The International Museum of Women is an innovative online museum that showcases art, stories and ideas to celebrate, inspire and advance the lives of women around the world. With the support of over 500 guests, IMOW raised over $200,000 to benefit its mission and exhibitions. Guests enjoyed a night of art and inspiration from the museum’s virtual collection, music, networking and dancing, while watching notable female artists create original artwork.
