A Glamourous Garden Party

Mireille Schwartz recently hosted an early evening cocktail reception at her Presidio Heights home in honor of her mother, Katiti Kironde. Ms. Kironde, whose father was the Ugandan ambassador to the United Nations, was a 1968 Glamour Magazine cover girl and – historically – the first black model to appear on a fashion magazine cover.

As noted by the Chronicle’s Carolyne Zinko, the party for the trailblazing Kironde coincided with another historic moment for African Americans — it was the same day that President Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize.

In August 1968, at the time of Katiti Kironde historic moment, young Barack and future wife Michelle were only 7 and 4 years-old, respectively, with decades of “firsts” before them. One can only guess about the wonderful advances that will occur in the lives of those of similar age today, such as Katiti’s granddaughter Charlotte Jude. From magazine covers to places in political power, or even to outer space, let’s hope there are no restrictions on where they can go and what they can achieve in life.

Guests dressed for the occasion in looks befitting a Glamour-ous garden party, with Katiti wearing a white blouse of her own design (part of her upcoming “Essential” White Shirt Collection by Katiti, which she paired with a Max Mara skirt.) Juicy Couture and Glamour Magazine sponsored elegant gift bags, and Pearl Vodka provided pomegranate libations, with Drew Altizer on site personally to photograph the event.
