Six perfumes from Ineke Perfumer San Francisco

For decades perfume companies have marketed their products by associating them with important people. Mostly fashion designers or celebrities, from Coco Chanel to Britney Spears, but even royalty (Prince Matchabelli) and business leaders have been evoked (yes, there’s even a Donald Trump cologne.) Somewhere along the line the true art of perfume making has been overlooked.

Thanks to the enticing scents created by Ineke Rühland, we’ve recently experienced the beauty that a true perfumer can create. Based in San Francisco, Ineke is one of a very small number of classically-trained perfumers in the world. Her fragrance lineIneke, sold at over 150 stores worldwide, has become a favorite of connoisseurs not through celebrity endorsements or flashy ad campaigns, but because of the rich beauty of the scents alone.

Ineke fragrances are rooted in her perfumery education in Versailles, France, and apprenticeship in Paris. Since starting the line in 2006 she has developed 6 perfumes.

Her latest is called “Field Notes From Paris.” It was created to capture the ambience of lingering at a Parisian café, with a scent that combines the warmth of tobacco flower and leaf with vintage perfumery notes of coriander seed, patchouli and tonka bean.

Evening Edged in Gold

Evening Edged in Gold

Our favorite is “Evening Edged in Gold,” which features the sensual warmth and opulence of night-scented flowers. It’s a fragrance for sparkling soirées, perfect in any season.

Other perfumes in the line have similarly evocative names: “After My Own Heart” (said to be a favorite of Alicia Keys), “Balmy Days & Sundays,” “Chemical Bonding,” and “Derring-Do.” Derring-Do is Ineke’s fragrance for men — darkly romantic, and crafted to make one think of spring rain.

The collection can be purchased at ineke.com, or at some of our favorite stores such as Gumps in San Francisco, Takashimaya in New York, Fred Segal in Los Angeles, Liberty in London and Isetan in Tokyo.
