The Gala Top 20, San Francisco’s Best Dressed

Drew Altizer
20 September 2010

We were delighted to see several friends and readers in the fashion coverage that Carolyne Zinko (of the San Francisco Chronicle) gave of the 2010 Symphony and Opera opening nights.  Carolyne conducted a reader poll, and came up with the public’s picks for the best dressed women at both events.

The Symphony look with the most votes was Yurie Pascarella‘s cream-and-black gown by the late Italian designer Gianfranco Ferre, followed by a tie between Elizabeth Touw and Deepa Pakianathan for second place. For the Opera, Deepa again captured the attention of Chronicle readers – her Zuhair Murad dress worn with a Rosalina Lydster diamond choker ($120,000) and pendant ($48,000) received the most votes.

But here at SFLuxe.com, we are not a democracy, and the only vote we count is our own!  So after debating with friends around town for over a week, and pouring over approximately 6,000 photos provided by Drew Altizer, we have narrowed down our selection to the following twenty.

A note on our criteria: we only considered photos of women by themselves (no group shots or dates), and are only including one look per woman.

Our Favorite: Marie Carr at the Opera. W-O-W.

Number 2: Elizabeth Touw in Roland Mouret at Symphony. Sexy, regal and elegant all at once.

Number 3: Bradley James at Symphony. The ultimate in young modern glamour.

Number 4: Angelique Griepp in Karen Caldwell at Symphony. Bold yet classic, in a stunning design echoing the legendary Madame Gres.

Number 5: Marcy Carmack in Karen Caldwell at Opera. A 30s Hollywood goddess with the sophistication of a Helmut Newton model.

Number 6: Deepa Pakianathan in Zuhair Murad at Opera. The traditional ball gown is made youthful, modern and fun.

Number 7: Paula Carano in Oscar de la Renta at Opera. A classic Oscar moment in this gala gown.

Number 8: Marissa Mayer in Carolina Herrera at Symphony. A classic silhouette, with bold coloring and a cutting edge design.

Number 9: Jennifer Siebel Newsom in Karen Caldwell at Opera. Her last Opera season as First Lady ends on a high note.

Number 10: Nicole Curran in Monique Lhuillier at Opera. A sophisticated European glamour that is undeniably chic.

Number 11: Sabrina Buell at Opera. The new mother still a trendsetter in a dress that has downtown edge with elegance.

Number 12: Clara Shayevich at Opera. A sleek, minimalist look sparkling with an aura of glamour.

Number 13: Juliet de Baubigny in Andrew Gn at Opera. The ultimate in a certain kind of refined, sophisticated femininity.

Number 14: Karen Caldwell at Symphony. Beautiful in her own designs, it's no wonder she

Number 15: Victoria Yeager Sawyer at Opera. Refusing to be stuffy at a gala, she brings excitement and energy to the evening.

Number 16: Karen Sutherland in Marchesa at Opera. Just as sleek and eye-catching as if on the runway itself.

Number 17: Brenda Zarate in Christian Dior at Symphony. Few women wear haute couture with as much youthfulness and fun.

Number 18: Rachel Bowman at Symphony. A magical dress for the perfect California night.

Number 19: Sonya Molodetskaya in Von Vonni at Opera. A grand dress for a grand occasion.

Number 20: Stefanie Tuttle at Opera. One can never go wrong with basic black, especially when it's cut so perfectly.
