Guillaume Henry, Simon Doonan and Vanessa Getty at Boulette’s Larder
“I look like Ruth Madoff tonight,” joked Simon Doonan by way of introduction. Wearing a black quilted silk jacket over black turtleneck and pants, Doonan reminded me that Mrs. Madoff is often photographed looking glum in a similar ensemble.

As one of the keenest observers of pop culture, behavior and fashion, it is Simon’s unique way of seeing the world through the lens of fashion that has made him not only one of the most influential people in fashion but really one of the nation’s great humorists. As Michael Kors once said, “Simon Doonan is a modern Noel Coward with a dash of Auntie Mame and Liberace thrown in for good measure!”

The reason for his recent visit to San Francisco was to co-host, with Vanessa Getty, a trunk show and dinner in honor of Carven designer Guillaume Henry.

Everyone at the dinner was charmed by the designer, who just arrived from Paris and was leaving the next morning for Beverly Hills, where he has a cult-like following among A-list celebrities.

But no one was more charmed than Guillaume himself, when Denise Hale told him that she had just spoken with Hubert de Givenchy on the phone, to thank him for a gift he had sent. Guillaume worked at the house of Givenchy after Hubert retired and never got to meet the master couturier. “He is like a god to me,” he said.

With husbands and children at home, it was mostly a ladies fashion night, and not surprisingly the fashion was top notch. Vanessa Getty was stunning despite feeling somewhat under the weather, and Elizabeth Touw showed that Carven’s items are seasonless – she purchased her beautiful jacket a year ago.
When she mentioned to Guillaume that she can never find the Carven pieces she wants at net-a-porter.com because they sell out so quickly, a Barney’s rep sitting nearby promised she would always be able to get her Carven needs met here in San Francisco!
Thank you, Barney’s!
