Jenny McCarthy returns as host to ring in the new year from Times Square for “Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2012” on Dec. 31 on ABC. She reflects on her own holiday traditions and discusses the many hats she wears as actress, best-selling author and activist.
MSN TV: The hottest names in music are lined up for “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2012.” Is there any one in particular you’re really looking forward to seeing the performance of?
Jenny McCarthy: I love Nicki Minaj, who is performing out of L.A., so I’ll be loving the screen watching her, but then we get Lady Gaga. Even more than the performance I’m excited to see what she’ll wear, what her eccentric style of performance will be, what she’s going to bring to it. It’s going to be off the charts: It’s her hometown and she’s never done this before. I’m just so excited about it!

Do you have an idea as to who will be your kiss after the countdown to the new year?
I don’t know. I might just represent single women that love themselves and give myself a hug. I will squeeze, squeeze myself.
What new year or holiday traditions do you look most forward to?
The eating! I do what most Midwesterners do, which is stock up on our meat and potatoes. Like beef stews and more baked goods. That’s by far my favorite thing to do, eat!
Speaking for autism is a big passion for you. What’s the latest in your initiative to spread awareness?
Right now I am currently the president of Generation Rescue, which is my autism organization. We’re in 38 countries around the world, and we are the only autism organization that is funding a grant program that helps pay for medical treatment that [has] children living with autism who make under $28,000 a year. Autism costs about $80,000 a year out of pocket, so our grant program funds 3,500 families and pays for their medical treatments. It’s wonderful and a great way to give back. I’m hoping to make it bigger and bigger so we can help more families that need it.
What other projects do you have in the works?
Two more days left of writing my next book, which is called “Sinner: Confessions of a Recovering Catholic.” It’s a really funny book about my childhood, growing up and being raised Catholic and, you know, Jesus posters vs. Madonna posters.
Best advice you’ve ever received?
It was from my mother, and that was when Evan was really autistic. He wasn’t responding to me or looking at me, smiling at me or talking to me. I was just a blob. I was telling her how awful I felt and felt like I didn’t even exist to him, and she said to me, “Jenny, everything responds to love.” That really changed the switch for me.
