“Lonesome George” was the last representative of the species of giant tortoises Chelonoidis abingdonii. The animal died Sunday in the Galapagos Archipelago.
Thus goes a species. “Lonesome George”, an old turtle than a hundred years, died Sunday in the archipelago of the Galapagos Islands, this sanctuary of biodiversity located 1000 miles off Ecuador. It was the last representative of the species Chelonoidis abingdonii.
George was discovered in 1972 on the tiny island of Pinta. Since then, several breeding attempts had been incurred. For years, scientists have tried to find females may breed with George. Many who had rubbed shoulders were still skeptical: the animal had never shown any particular appetite for reproduction and perhaps even he knew not how.
