Cruise and Holmes seek divorce – Celeb News Now

A battle over how to raise their daughter reportedly contributed to Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ split.

Holmes, 33, filed for divorce from the Hollywood star yesterday citing “irreconcilable differences”.

She is seeking sole legal custody and  “primary residential custody” of six-year-old Suri.

The main bone of contention in the relationship was Cruise’s ties to the Scientology church and their very different views on raising children, according to TMZ.

Sources told the site Holmes wanted primary custody so that Cruise no longer had control over decisions relating to religion.

Meanwhile, RadarOnline reported there was no way Holmes would let Cruise have sole custody of Suri like he did with his two other children, Connor and Bella, following his split from Nicole Kidman.

“Katie wants Suri to go to school with other children and have a grounded routine whereas Tom doesn’t,” an insider told the site.

“Tom is nowhere near as strict as Katie is and doesn’t believe in disciplining Suri, whereas Katie believes that’s important.

“Tom basically treats Suri as a little adult, and that causes some major clashes over parenting style.”

TMZ reported Holmes was requesting a “suitable amount” of child support and asking for their property to be divided up, although they had a prenuptial agreement in place.

A statement from Cruise’s representative said the divorce was Holmes’ decision.

“Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,” the message read. “Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”

Holmes’ attorney Jonathan Wolfe also released a statement.

“This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” the spokesperson said.

“Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

Cruise is currently in Iceland filming sci-fi movie Oblivion, while Holmes has remained in New York.

The announcement of the split also comes just four days before Cruise celebrates his 50th birthday on July 3.

The pair were married in November 2006 in an extravagant ceremony in Italy.

The Mission Impossible actor has been married twice before, to Mimi Rogers and Kidman.
