Reunited rockers the Stone Roses have triumphed at their official homecoming gig in Manchester after performing for 70,000 fans at Heaton Park on Friday.

The quartet reformed last year and announced a series of summer dates.

After playing a last-minute warm-up gig in Warrington on 12 May, singer Ian Brown and his band embarked on a tour of mainland Europe, which almost stalled as it started when drummer Alan ‘Reni’ Wren walked off stage during a show in Holland on 12 June, prompting the frontman to call him “a c**t”.

Fans feared the reunion was over, but the bandmates showed a united front at their next concert in Sweden, and all dates have been largely drama free ever since.

On Friday night, the Stone Roses returned to their native Manchester for the first of three sold-out Heaton Park shows and thrilled fans with a set that began with their anthemic I Wanna Be Adored and featured hits like Sally Cinnamon and Mersey Paradise.

The concert marked the band’s first large-scale show since guitarist John Squire quit the group in 1996, signalling the beginning of the end for the Stone Roses, who disbanded later that year.
