Justin Bieber car chase case thrown out

15 November 2012

Criminal charges against a paparazzo who followed Justin Bieber at high speeds through Los Angeles have been thrown out of court. Paul Raef was booked in July after the pop superstar identified the snapper as the alleged leader of a pack of photographers who tailed his Fisker Karma sports car along the 101 Freeway in California. The four traffic counts came under a 2010 paparazzi law, which makes it a crime to create a dangerous situation while in pursuit of a celebrity for profit. The case went to court in August and a decision was delayed until a later arraignment, but on Wednesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Thomas Robinson dismissed the charges. Explaining his ruling, Robinson branded the newly-introduced legislation as “problematic” and “overly inclusive”. Raef was the first person to be prosecuted on the new charge of reckless driving with the intent to capture pictures for commercial gain. If he had been found guilty, he faced up to a year behind bars and a fine of £2,188. MORE
