The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced 22 recalls in October. This is comparable to the number of recalls issued in October of last year (20). Of the 22 recalls issued this October, five (23%) were for sports & fitness products, while nine (41%) were for children’s products. The remaining CPSC recalls were spread across a variety of categories, including home and garden products, electronics and guns. In addition, the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration issued one recall on a child car seat.
Only one recall topped 100,000 units last month. 170,800 interior bifold doors were recalled because the lower pivot pin on the door can break, causing the door to disengage from the overhead track. At the time of this recall, there were twelve incidents reported, resulting in three injuries.
There were two baby product recalls involving units that surpassed 50,000. 97,000 Eddie Bauer wood bassinets and 89,400 Graco wood highchairs were recalled after several incidents and injuries were reported. The bassinets can tip, causing infants to roll to the side, posing a suffocation hazard, and the highchair’s seat can loosen or detach from the base, allowing the child to fall out of the highchair. 17 incidents, including two that involved infants who suffered from breathing difficulties after rolling into the side of the bassinet, were reported. 58 incidents, including nine injuries, were reported with the highchairs.
Three other products also topped 50,000 units. 84,000 step stools were recalled because the top step used as a standing platform can break while in use. Five incidents and one injury were reported at the time of recall. 80,000 Sharper Image USB wall chargers were recalled because the chargers can overheat, posing a fire hazard. 13 incidents, but no injuries were reported. Finally, 62,000 GE front-load washers were recalled because the basket in the washer’s top panel can break, posing an injury hazard to the user. 19 incidents without injury were reported.
Two recalls are significant due to the high number of reported incidents relative to the units involved. 40,000 TRX suspension trainer devices were recalled because the strap length-adjustment buckles can break, a defect that resulted in 570 incidents, including 82 falls and 13 head, face, shoulder and hip injuries. 5000 Haier LED TVs were recalled because the TV stand’s neck support can break, causing the TV to tip over. At the time of the recall, 184 incidents, but no injuries were reported.
Of the remaining recalls, one children’s product recall is notable due to the fact that the product has been on market for five years. On average, recalls occur about 1.5 years after a product was first sold new in stores. 16,850 upholstered toddler chairs were recalled due to staples in the back of the chair coming loose, causing laceration and choking hazards. These chairs have been sold since November 2007; however no incidents or injuries have been reported.
Other October children’s product recalls include booster seats, stroller attachments, high chairs, clothing, and light-up toys, including some you may have received on Halloween.
