Typhoon kills four, destroys homes in southern Philippines

The strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year pounded the southern island of Mindanao on Tuesday, killing four people, destroying homes and toppling power and communication lines, officials said. Typhoon Bopha, with wind gusts of up to 195 kph (121 mph), made landfall at dawn, uprooting trees and tearing off roofs and was headed for major tourist destinations in the central Philippines. About 20 people were reported missing. “There goes my house,” Landring Ceballos, a fisherman in Davao Oriental province told reporters by telephone from high ground as he watched winds lift his makeshift house and dump it in the sea. Benito Ramos, executive director of the national disaster agency, said four people were confirmed dead. Media said dozens of people were injured by flying debris, falling trees and swept away by swollen rivers and flash floods. About 20 people, including six soldiers, were reported missing when rampaging water swept an army base, a military spokesman said, adding rescue helicopters had been grounded

London Mayor: Britain must renegotiate relationship with EU

London Mayor Boris Johnson said on Tuesday the British people should be given a referendum on whether to stay in a European Union pared back to the single market only. Speaking at a Thomson Reuters Newsmaker event in London , Johnson said Britain’s relationship with the EU should be renegotiated around a model based on free trade and fewer barriers to business. If achieved, he said, that would allow London to flourish further as a financial centre. “The euro is a calamitous project,” he said in a speech. “We should use the opportunity of the Treaty changes — perhaps over the banking union — to convene an intergovernmental conference in which we bring Britain’s membership in line with what people want. “Boil it down to the single market. That is a renegotiated Treaty we could and should put to the vote of the British people,” he said.

UK construction activity crumbles as optimism evaporates – PMI

British construction activity shrank last month and confidence about the next 12 months fell to its lowest in almost four years, a survey showed on Tuesday, in a blow to the government the day before a budget statement. The Markit/CIPS Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell to 49.3 last month from 50.9 in October. It was the lowest headline figure since August and below the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction for the third time in four months. It was also below even the weakest forecast in a Reuters poll and well short of the median 50.5 prediction. “November’s PMI survey suggests that construction output has yet to hit rock bottom,” said Tim Moore, senior economist at Markit.
