Money No Enough 2, his 2008 film about family values, has been playing non-stop in a cinema in Taichung since May 20, 2009. That makes it the longest-running movie in Taiwan’s movie history. SINGAPORE – Jack Neo has made some of Singapore’s most popular movies, but many of his most ardent fans are in Taiwan.

Money No Enough 2, his 2008 film about family values, has been playing non-stop in a cinema in Taichung since May 20, 2009. That makes it the longest-running movie in Taiwan’s movie history.

Some 150,000 people have watched it at the second-run Wonderful cinema, which screens movies at a fraction of the price charged at first-run houses.

Wonderful’s owner, Mr Hwang Ping-hsi, 60, and a father of three grown children, is himself the movie’s No. 1 fan. He screens it once every weekday and twice on weekends at his 30-year-old movie house.

“It is a meaningful show which could have happened in Taiwan, given our ageing population,” he said. “In fact, I don’t think of it as a foreign film at all.”

The plot revolves around a family of three materialistic brothers who exploit their elderly mother.

Oddly enough, Neo’s first Money No Enough was never shown at Wonderful. A smash hit in Singapore in 1998, it flopped in Taiwan, playing just one week.

Great concert, trashy ending

By Benson Ang The New Paper Tuesday, Dec 11, 2012 SINGAPORE – It was a great concert, befitting of the sky-high ticket prices. But it did not elicit great behaviour. The 15,000-strong crowd left Singapore’s latest iconic landmark, Gardens by the Bay – which won two top Asian design awards on Thursday – looking more like Garbage by the Bay. Ponchos, water bottles, empty cups and tissue paper were strewn all over The Meadow at Gardens by the Bay after pop star Jennifer Lopez’s concert on Tuesday night. Tickets to the concert, organised by MediaCorp, were among the priciest of recent concerts here. Standard tickets cost $158 and VIP tickets $348

There must be limits

By Benson Ang The New Paper Tuesday, Dec 11, 2012 SINGAPORE – It’s entertaining. It’s funny, even hilarious, when radio DJs call unsuspecting listeners pretending to be someone else. HOT FM91.3′s Rod Monteiro and The Married Men are famous for Kenna Plucked (army slang for get pranked), a twice-weekly segment. Now, even they are asking how far is too far when it comes to such pranks. This follows the case of a nurse in Britain who apparently killed herself after transferring a call from Australian DJs, who’d enquired after the hospitalised Duchess of Cambridge, pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles. The Duchess was being treated for acute morning sickness at theKing Edward VII hospital in London.

Google Announces Updates to Maps API

Google announced an update to the Google Maps API which will make it easier to insert vector-base maps into applications. This will provide developers better and more comprehensive set of tools to integrate maps into Android Apps. The new API uses vector-based maps that support 2D and 3D views, and allow users to tilt and rotate the map with simple gestures. Included in the update are layers from Google Maps such as satellite, hybrid, terrain, and traffic, and indoor maps for many major airports and shopping centres in the user’s apps. Google launched the update on Monday, Dec 3, and is a part of Google Play services 2.0, allowing more simple and agile access to Google products within Android apps. The update will directly benefit users of Android OS once developers have integrated the new maps API to their applications. There are reports that updates will also soon be made available for iOS devices
