Wall Street inches up as McDonald's and tech lead the way

Stocks edged higher on Monday, helped by gains in McDonald’s after the fast-food giant posted strong sales results, and a move up in technology shares. Technology stocks were the S&P 500′s best-performing sector as Hewlett-Packard Co climbed 2.9 percent to $14.20 on rumors that activist investor Carl Icahn is building a stake in the PC maker. The stock is down 44.5 percent for the year and ranks as the Dow’s worst performer. Tech was also supported by Cisco Systems , which gained 2.4 percent to $19.79 after the company presented its midterm growth strategy on Friday. Monday’s rally put the stock on track for its fifth advance in the past six sessions. The American Film Institute announced its selections for the 2012 AFI Awards on Monday, recognizing outstanding achievements in film and TV. Among its selections for the 10 best movies of the year are Oscar front-runners Lincoln , Arg o, Les Miserables , Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings Playbook . Also chosen: Moonrise Kingdom , Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Dark Knight Rises . But the Institute had no love for The Weinstein Co.’s The Master , Paul Thomas Anderson ‘s period drama loosely based on the beginnings of Scientology.
It’s that time of year when prognostications abound about what’s in store for 2013. Stick with the home builders! Embrace the financials! Editors and producers love predictions. Sure, it helps clicks and ratings and makes for great headline fodder but for individual investors, it’s not very useful information at all. It’s more noise that investors would be better off shutting out.
The Voice Mexico ( La Voz Mexico) will resume Sunday on Televisa after being postponed by the death of Jenni Rivera , the network confirms to The Hollywood Reporter . Rivera, who joined the second season of the reality singing competition as a music coach, died Dec. 9 with six others in a plane crash near Monterrey, Mexico, while en route to Mexico City. Televisa delayed that night’s semifinal episode of The Voice Mexico following news of the crash; instead, the network aired a special on the superstar singer. In a three-way cable bidding war, FX ultimately landed their latest drama pilot, Tyrant , which centers on an unassuming American family drawn into the workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Raff, who created and single handedly wrote every episode of Israeli series and Homeland inspiration Hatufim , created the series concept, which Gordon and Craig Wright ( Six Feet Under, Lost )developed for U.S. TV. Raff has already penned the pilot script, which is set up at Gordon’s 20th Century Fox Television-based production company, Teakwood Lane. Gordon, Raff and Wright are all attached as executive producers on the effort, in association with Israel’s Keshet Broadcasting. If ultimately ordered to series, Wright will serve as the series’ showrunner. TORONTO – U.S. anti-virus pioneer John McAfee , recently arrested by Guatemalan police and facing deportation to Belize as part of a murder investigation, has apparently entrusted his life story to Montreal-based TV producer Impact Future Media. Honolulu-based Brian Fitzgerald , who co-founded the TV production shingle with CEO François Garcia , based in Montreal, said he secured the exclusive IP rights to the embattled tech guru’s story. “He (McAfee) trusts that we will honor his life story in an honest and truthful manner,” Fitzgerald told The Hollywood Reporter in an email statement on Monday. In particular he was looking at the fast-growing Asian market (which almost always means China ). He was serious. Sunday, the French company said it acquired a majority stake in the Chinese fine jewelry brand Qeelin . The transaction is expected to be finalized in January 2013. Qeelin describes itself as a company that “embraces the mythical essence of China’s cultural heritage with the excellence of French craftsmanship” through contemporary fine jewelry design
MOSCOW – MTV Russia will go off the air next June and will be replaced with another entertainment channel, Pyatnitsa, aimed at broader audiences. The Russian business daily Vedomosti has quoted ad agency employees as saying that they recently attended presentations of Pyatnitsa, organized by Profmedia, which has owned the Russian license for the brand MTV since 2007. According to the report, as of June 1, 2013, Pyatnitsa will be launched on the frequency currently occupied by MTV Russia, targeting the 14-44 age group as opposed to MTV Russia’s 14-34 target demo. Launched in 1998 by Boris Zosimov , who sold the channel to Viacom in 2002, MTV Russia was one of the most popular entertainment TV channels in the country throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s. But over the last few years, popularity of MTV Russia has been declining, with its audience share falling to 1.6 percent in 2011 from 2.2 percent the year before, according to research company TNS.
