The year of 1953 was a year of important “firsts” in the history of fashion. A shy young man named Yves Saint Laurent moved to Paris to become a fashion designer. Marilyn Monroe starred in “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” and forever made diamonds a girl’s best friend. An unknown actress by the name of Audrey Hepburn became an overnight style icon in “Roman Holiday.”
And in Florence, Italy, Aldo Gucci expanded his family’s leather goods business with the creation of the horsebit loafer, a shoe that would become the most iconic Gucci shoe ever made.

With Sloan and Roger Barnett, Sabrina Buell and Yves Behar, Jean-Pierre Conte, and Alison and Mark Pincus, Gucci recently hosted a private cocktail party at the San Francisco store to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the loafer, and the new 1953 collection for men and women. At the event, Gucci launched a new Made to Order program offering guests the exclusive opportunity to create a customized version of the loafer, by choosing from a selection of materials, colors, linings, and horsebit finishings.
To further highlight the 60th anniversary, the store showcased archival images of celebrities wearing the iconic loafer, including Sophia Loren, Jane Birkin, Jodie Foster, and Francis Ford Coppola.

For the new 1953 loafer collection for men and women, Gucci’s Creative Director Frida Giannini envisioned a bold combination of colors and materials, and a new shape bearing the hardware that has inspired a legacy.

The 1953 loafer is available in a wide selection of shades and materials: from patent leather and suede, exotic crocodile and python, and canvas printed with the Gucci Flora pattern. While hardware features either antique brass or nickel, one particular style uses studs in an all-over decoration on the upper side, on the trim and the back. Inside each shoe is a special label with the “Gucci 1953 Made in Italy” script.

A percentage of the evening’s sales supported the installation of The Bay Lights, the largest light sculpture in the world by internationally renowned artist Leo Villareal.
Unveiled on March 5, 2013, The Bay Lights is the world’s largest LED light sculpture, 1.8 miles wide and 500 feet high. Inspired by the Bay Bridge’s 75th Anniversary, its 25,000 white LED lights are individually programmed by artist Leo Villareal to create a never-repeating, dazzling display across the Bay Bridge West Span through 2015. $6 Million of the $8 Million needed for installation, maintenance and removal has been raised to date.
