The San Francisco General Hospital Foundation recently held its eighth annual “Heroes & Hearts” awards luncheon. For 2013, it was held on the field of AT&T Park, which presented an excellent setting for guests to view the one-of-a-kind 400 pound heart sculptures created by Linda Adreveno, Shay Davis, Pere Gifre, Saul Levy, Judith Lippe, Trinh Mai, Shilo Ratner and Betsy L. Wolff.

The award recognizes those who have demonstrated exceptional community service. Heroes include San Francisco Police Officers John Cathey and David Sands, Rochelle Dicker MD, and Oncology Social Workers, Carol Lam and Rachel Orkand, MSW, LCSW.

Global Green USA recently held it 8th annual Gorgeous & Green Gala at the LEED-certified Bently Reserve to celebrate sustainable design, green technologies, and eco-conscious initiatives making a difference in people’s lives throughout the Bay Area and nationally.

The event, which featured celebrity hosts Michelle Branch, actress Cody Horn, Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Dan Vickrey of Counting Crows, and Ed O’Neill from “Modern Family,” raised $230,000 dollars for Post-Sandy green rebuilding efforts.

Three Eco-Accolade Awards recognizing superior commitment to sustainability were presented to Bay Area companies Google, PwC, and DLR Group.  The runway fashion show curated by Lily Achatz and Clarissa Nicosia featured top eco-fashion designers Mina+Olya, Prophetik, Oliver Tolentino, Amour Vert, PACT, and Cari Borja, with a special segment by Vintage a la Mode.

The models were provided by Stars Model Management with hair by Pureology, makeup by Vapour Organic Beauty, and music by DJ Donovan.

The amazing Michelle Branch performed her popular songs for the crowd to adoring applause, while Drew Altizer Photography and Torso Vintages hosted a popular photo booth where guests dressed in glamorous winter whites against a fireplace backdrop.

It was also an occasion for Jimmy Choo to unveil the new capsule collection created in collaboration with contemporary artist Rob Pruitt.

The Rob Pruitt and Cruise 2013 Collections were Unveiled at Jimmy Choo

Pruitt, with his iconoclastic humour and visual exuberance, emerged from the New York art scene in the late 1980s. From glittering panda bear paintings to large scale degrade canvases with a scribble of human expression, to a silvered Andy Warhol monument on public view, Pruitt is known for producing playful and profound art work.

Referencing Pruitt’s art influences, the collection has a whimsical feel, incorporating some of his recurring artistic themes. Each product is finished with a wonderful attention to detail, including playful linings, exclusive materials and hand-finished soles.

The event was held in the Rotunda of City Hall, with Susie Hoganson and Trish Otstott as co-chairs and Lisa Grotts as dinner chair. To mark the event, a centennial scarf was given to guests, depicting the 100-year history. “Happy Birthday Junior League” was sung at the conclusion, with enormous gold and pink balloons dropping from the ceiling! Sponsors for the evening included Bank of the West, Deloitte, JCB Winery, CPMC Foundation, Wells Fargo Foundation, Niantic Corporation and KPMG.

Special guest speaker was Heidi Kuhn of Marin County, founder and CEO of Roots of Peace, an organization dedicated to the eradication of landmines worldwide. In 1997, Kuhn was inspired by the late Princess Diana’s humanitarian efforts to educate the world of the danger and destruction of landmines. She pursued the support of Napa Valley vintners to transform “mines to vines” by supplying grapevines to be planted in the ravaged grounds of the war-torn countries.

The Deans were inspired by Daniel Yuval, an 11-year-old Israeli boy who lost his leg when he stepped on a land mine in the Golan Heights.

Four billion people worldwide live on less than $3 a day and have no access to formal work. That disturbing fact has weighed heavily on the minds of Samasource’s founder and supporters since the organization was founded in 2008 to provide free, specialized technology training and work opportunities throughout the world.

At the recent Samasource fundraiser in San Francisco, influential business leaders, tech entrepreneurs, and philanthropists joined to raise $700,000 to help the organization reach its goal of providing life-changing work to over 4,000 women and youth globally this year.

“The core idea behind Samasource,” according to Leila Janah, the charismatic young founder and CEO, is “that poor people want the same things that everyone does — a decent job that pays a living wage and offers some stability. Giving people work instead of, or as a complement to, aid is appealing to pretty much everyone.”

So far, Samasource has connected women and youth across 9 countries to over $2.3 million in living wages. generally the participants are able to earn a living wage within two weeks of entering the program.

Bold new art, along with objects from the Asian Art Museum’s own renowned collection in San Francisco, is featured in the new exhibit “Phantoms of Asia: Contemporary Awakens the Past,” which explores spirits, spirituality, cosmic order, and the afterlife.

The museum’s first large scale exhibition of contemporary art provides a provocative interplay of 150 artworks from past and present, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, site-specific creations, and more by artists from all over Asia, including Adeela Suleman, Adrian Wong, Fuyuko Matsui, Hyon Gyon, Raqib Shaw, Motohiko Odani and others.

A unique evening of art and artists began with a cocktail reception in the museum’s Samsung Hall with exhibition viewing throughout the museum. The evening included a seated dinner in a specially designed adjacent tent, a sumptuous four course dinner catered by McCall Associates, and colorful performance by Quixotic, an ensemble of artists from various disciplines including aerial acrobatics and dance. This special fundraising event raised more than $850,000 in support of the exhibition and its related programs.

Phantoms of Asia, which runs through September 2, 2012, explores the spiritual and supernatural roots of Asian art and culture through a compelling interplay of more than 60 contemporary artworks in dialogue with 80 historical objects. Please join Care Through Action’s for a unique and elegant fundraising dinner on Wednesday February 15th, 2012 at the award-winning restaurant Dosa on Fillmore. Hosting the event are Alexander Lloyd, Claudia Ross, Howard Cheng, Jude Vargas, Kristen Green, Sunil Daluvoy.

Care Through Action was started by photojournalist Alissa Everett to raise awareness of Human Rights Issues through dramatic documentary photography. Currently the foundation’s focus for giving is on the Congo, and 100% of the proceeds from the benefit will support their on-going partnership with HEAL Africa in the Congo, who every day change the lives of women who have been victims of violence. Several safe houses are operated where women can go to rebuild their lives, find community, and learn new skills like sewing, basket weaving or bread making. The women are also offered micro loans that can be used to start a business and become self-sufficient.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the first formal report of the AIDS virus, and all over the country cities, museums, organizations, celebrities and individuals have commemorated the occasion with exhibitions, art installations, TV specials, and symposiums. Although still no cure has been found it is an important milestone considering that HIV/AIDS is now considered a chronic illness if patients receive the proper treatment and support.

But much more needs to be done, and DIFFA (Design Industry Foundation Fighting AIDS), one of the country’s largest supporter of direct care for people living with HIV/AIDS, returns to San Francisco with the 11th consecutive Dining by Design event to raise money for the Positive Health Program part of the UCSF AIDS Research Institute

Only a few weeks away on November 16 and 17, 2011, this colorful high design event will once again turn the Galleria at the San Francisco Design Center into a feast for the eye. Bringing together leaders from the worlds of design, art, architecture, and fashion with fine gastronomy and philanthropy has been a marriage made in heaven for more than a decade now.

Whether Ken Fulk has Snow White portrayed by a six foot drag queen sleeping in a glass coffin in the middle of his grand table while seven tipsy dwarves roam the party, or exotic bird handlers Steven Miller and Paul Benson make Fauxnique dance in their enormous birdcage, Dining by Design is always full of surprises.

During the first evening’s Table Hop & Taste guests will view the amazing installations while enjoying cocktails by Effen Vodka and hors d’oeuvres by a variety of restaurants and chefs including 25 Lusk, Fifth Floor and Limon and Chef Tyler Stone, contestant of the upcoming “Top Chef.” On the night of the Gala guests will actually dine amid the over-the-top settings enjoying a three-course meal prepared by Taste Catering.

Also participating for the first time will be fashion designer, Mondo Guerra whom many may know from his heartfelt confession about being HIV-positive on “Project Runway.” Since then Mondo has aligned himself with Living Positive By Design campaign. Along with Jack Mackenroth, another HIV-positive “Project Runway” alumnus, they are at the helm of an HIV education campaign supported by global healthcare leader Merck, encouraging people living with the disease to maintain a positive outlook on life while working with their doctors to manage their treatment.

For Dining by Design Mondo is collaborating with interior design students from San Francisco State University. Together they are creating a community table called “Phoenix”, inspired by Mondo’s journey, highlighting the contrast of tragedy and triumph, and celebrating a rise from the ashes punctuated by a small single flower growing from the glowing destruction.

“I’m truly inspired to partner with such talented students and to be able to be a part of such a beautiful event, which gives back and supports a cause that is so dear to my heart,” said Guerra. “Through my partnership with Merck, Living Positive By Design, I hope to inspire others to continue to have an open heart, and not only take steps to work with their doctors to manage their disease, but also their overall health.”

Breath of Life Gala to Benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

We hear that more than 300 esteemed guests are expected to attend the Breath of Life Gala at the Four Seasons this month, one of the most important fund-raising events of the year! It should be an exciting evening for an important cause, and promises a special perk for fans of Glee — they will be auctioning four behind-the-scenes passes to a taping of the show!

The black-tie event, occurring Saturday, October 30, 2010, will raise an estimated $200,000 to support the mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be honoring Dr. Bruce Montgomery, Senior Advisor of Gilead Sciences, Inc. Dr. Montgomery has played an integral role in the therapeutics development of drugs for CF patients over the last two decades. He was instrumental in helping obtain approval for Cayston, a treatment to improve respiratory symptoms in CF patients with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. He has also managed the development of inhaled tobramycin as well as helped Genetech Inc. develop pulmozyme, another treatment for CF.

Presented by A-Med Health Care, a pharmacy dedicated to serving patients living with Cystic Fibrosis, the evening will begin with a 6:30 reception, followed by dinner, live auction, presentation of the “Breath of Life Award” to Dr. Montgomery, and casino style games and entertainment by jazz sensation Jacqui Naylor. A silent auction will also be available throughout the evening.

The live auction items include the ultimate Masters golf experience, including transportation and accommodations for two along with two tournament badges for one Championship round; a London Showbiz Getaway for two at the Soho Hotel, dinner at the London’s most exclusive private members’ club, The Ivy; seven nights at a gorgeous 4500 square foot La Quinta vacation home; and the special highlight for certain TV fans: Four behind-the-scenes passes to a taping of the hit show “Glee”!

When the Foundation was established in 1955, children with CF were not expected to live long enough to attend elementary school. Over $10,000 was recently raised for the Meals on Heels program of San Francisco Lighthouse at a special one-night-only interior design showcase at Adorean Boleancu’s residence at the SOMA Grand.

Guests were ushered through three penthouse apartments, beautifully designed with pieces from Ochi & Company, Fabricut, The Sherill Collection, and DJ Mehler, among others based in the San Francisco Design Center.

After the tour, everyone watched a touching, eye-opening video about life on the streets of San Francisco, and the work that Lighthouse does in alleviating some of the struggles for food and shelter that homeless people face on a daily basis.

The evening was planned by Sophie Azouaou, Eileen Bourgade and Beth Schnitzer (of Spritz Marketing.)  ”The goal of the ShowRise was to show 3 different styles of penthouses with different budgets and functional needs, while raising awareness about San Francisco Lighthouse, and money for a truck to deliver food,” said Sophie Azouaou.

“The money raised at the event is going to be a huge kick-start for the growth of Meals on Heels,” said Rachel Wierenga, fundraising coordinator for San Francisco Lighthouse.

The event was dedicated to the memory of Sophie’s mentor, Bella Farrow, the beloved San Francisco philanthropist and socialite who supported innumerable organizations including St. Francis Hospital, The Breast Cancer Emergency Fund, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

The Caldwell Snyder Gallery in San Francisco recently opened its doors for a private event honoring FAAN, the Food Allergy Anaphylaxis Network, and to honor the FAAN CEO Julia E. Bradsher, along with the newest National Boardmember Mireille Schwartz.

Based in Washington D.C., FAAN is the world’s largest leading non-profit allergy resource, and works with policymakers on federal, state, and local initiatives in areas such as food labeling, epinephrine availability, and management of food allergies in schools, camps, airlines, and restaurants.

Executive chef Michael Woodward, of MW in Ross, prepared a special allergen-free menu for the evening, which thoughtfully excluded eggs, milk/dairy, wheat, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and shellfish, to demonstrate that a beautiful meal can be created for over 100 people that is sensitive to a wide range of allergens and health issues.

A few surprises of the evening included: a spectacular DJ Set by Crash-It Production’s dynamic duo DJ Wunder & DJ Keltec, a moving FAAN video message featuring Mireille and her daughter Charlotte Jude – both of whom have severe food allergies, a new exhibit of paintings by artist Melissa Chandon, a FAAN Award of Appreciation for San Francisco Luxury Living’s Damion Matthews, and Senatorial Certificates of Recognition to the night’s two honorees presented by Senator Mark Leno.

The San Francisco Food Bank collects millions of pounds of food from growers, packers, processors, manufacturers, the USDA and grocery stores. This can include test-marketed products, items close to code date, produce that is the wrong shape or size for conventional markets and excess. This year Friends of the Earth, an environmental organization and network of grassroots groups in 77 countries dedicated to championing a more healthy and just world, will hold its signature event, the Green Ball, on Friday, May 21st at 1 Fort Mason in San Francisco.

Notable Bay Area television journalist Doug McConnell will host this year’s event, joining Honorary Chairs Jayni & Chevy Chase and Co-Chairs Linda S. Gordon and Russell Long to honor several outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a profound commitment to environmental and humanitarian efforts. Friends of the Earth President, Erich Pica, who recently appeared on such notable news programs as NBC Nightly News, PBS NewsHour, and MSNBC’s The Dylan Ratigan Show and Countdown with Keith Olbermann, will also be in attendance.

Awards will be presented to Tom Hormel who will receive the Green Philanthropy Award for his longstanding commitment to environmental and humanitarian efforts, Zem Joaquin who will be honored with the Green Lifestyle Award for her commitment to green living and sustainable design, and 13 year old youth activist Aitan Grossman, who will receive the Green Initiative Youth Award for writing the song “100 Generations” and starting the kidEarth project, which has become an international movement creating a united youth voice in the climate battle.

Moonalice, a band of musicians whose members have played with Jefferson Starship, Rod Stewart, the Flying Other Brothers, and Ann Atomic will be on-hand as the evening’s featured entertainment. Guests will enjoy organic, locally-sourced cuisine from Fork & Spoon productions, organic and biodynamic wines from Frey Vineyards, hand crafted ales from North Coast Brewing Company, and a signature cocktail from Blue Ice Organic Vodka. In true Friends of the Earth form, the evening will be free of plastic bottles, and most organic waste accumulated at the event will be composted.
